Adelaide Place (or Plaice) was the youngest of nine children born to Ralph Place (1830-1888) and his wife Maria Grubb (1832-1883). She was born at Low Head on 23 Sep 1870 where her father was a pilot or boatman. Her parents were married at St David's in Hobart on 15 Aug 1854 when Ralph was a constable. Four of her siblings died young, including 14-year-old Ralph who was murdered on Green Island in 1872. Adelaide was a soprano in the Exhibition Choir in 1891-92. She also sang in various fund-raising concerts in Launceston. She died in London, England, on 28 Jul 1956 at the age of 86.
