Annie Maud Tarlton, known by her second name, was born in South Australia in 1876. She was the sixth child of Robert Alfred Tarlton (1828-1918) and his second wife Sophia Walters Turner. Maud attended the Methodist Ladies College in Launceston where she was awarded a prize in 1891. Her family moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, where she married Alexander McCalman in 1910. The couple lived in Kenya from early 1914. Her brothers Leslie, Elliot and Henry all lived nearby, or visited frequently. Maud travelled extensively to the USA, New Zealand, France, Italy, Switzerland, England and British East Africa. Maud died in 1958. See The Examiner 19 Aug 2006, p. 33.
